Akagera National Park was named after the Akagera River that flows through it. It is situated at about 65. 4 miles from Kigali City. The Akagera National Park is definitely the destination for the New Millennium. It awakes you to a different world. A beautiful picturesque world. Animals such as the King of the jungle Mr. Alex the Lion with some of his companions like Marty the Zebra and Melman the Giraffe are found wandering around in our park, not forgetting Gloria, Mrs. Hippo (We love the movie Madagascar here at Mugisha Tours). This is to mean that the National Park has THE BIG FIVE indeed. The very much coveted Shoebill Stork is most at home in the papyrus swamps of the Akagera National Park.
The Akagera was restored in the 1990s and it now houses a wide range of savannah adapted species such as Impala and topi, eland, oribi, Masai giraffe, Defassa waterbuck, reedbuck, bushbuck, sable and roan antelope, crocodiles, rhinoceros and many more. Akagera is the last refuge for these savannah animals hence being extremely cherished and protected.
It houses all kind of animals and birds that a game ride or a boat ride would show you. You may not be able to see all of them as it now houses more than 8,000 animals in this park.
